Universal Credit provides income for people who are in need of financial support. In recent days, there have been reports that the phone lines for Universal Credit claims have been swamped.

Some of these people may never have never required Universal Credit before.
Managing this new reality may be tricky for many people, especially new claimants.
Fortunately, free tools are available to help anyone with managing their situations.
One of these tools comes from the Money Advice Service.
They provide a “Money Manager” tool that is designed just for people on Universal Credit.
This tool can be used for new claims or for people moving to Universal Credit from existing legacy benefits.
It will help users make the most of their money while they’re waiting for their first payment and/or when they’re receiving regular payments.

The Money Manager tool provides information and advice from experts and it is tailored towards the users circumstances.
The first page of the tool details the following:
- The user will only get information and advice based on their personal circumstances
- The user can budget for a single monthly payment using our calculator
- The user can work out the best ways to pay their rent
- Find out which bank accounts are best for managing payments
- Get money saving tips for cutting the cost of household bills
- Save information and go back to it whenever wanted
- Find out what to do and where to get help if the user is struggling

To get started with the tool, the user will need to clarify if they live in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales.
Following this the tool has 11 questions to be answered. The first questions ask if the user has received their first payment and if they’re in a couple or not.
It will then ask for the users housing details and if they’re behind with rent or mortgage payments. The next few questions focus on the user’s financial situation.
The tool asks the user if they pay any bills directly from a bank account and if they have any loans or debts. The final questions focus on the user’s family situation.
The user will be asked if they have any children younger than 20 living with them, if they’re a carer for someone and if they’re working at all.
Once all this information has been entered, the user will be presented with a vast amount of advice and suggestions.
This advice will be dependent on the user’s answers but it could include advice on how to claim with children, managing money with rental commitments and dealing with debts.
On top of this, the tool provides general tips and tricks which can help people in all circumstances. These tips advise users to work out that they spend money on, be weary of special offers and avoid impulse buying.
