Cleaning your kitchen is about more than wiping down the surfaces, mopping the floor and scrubbing the oven… you need to clean the fridge too. Disinfecting the fridge is a time-consuming job that we all turn a blind eye to but it is absolutely essential in order to avoid food poisoning. Keeping your fridge clean and sanitised will also extend the durability of the appliance. Cleaning expert at HomeHow.co.uk, Joyce French, has shared her seven deep cleaning tips which will revive your fridge back to brand new.
The best way to keep your fridge clean is to wipe up spills immediately and stay in the habit of checking food regularly so it doesn’t stay in the fridge after it goes off.
Before opening any longer durability products such as salad dressing, check how long it can stay once opened and keep the item on the shelf as a reminder.
You should aim for a deeper clean four times a year and when you have as little food in the fridge as possible.
Every night, wipe the fridge handles with soap and water to keep germs to a minimum.
You can even create a rota for cleaning different parts of the fridge over the course of a month for interval deep cleaning.

Empty the contents
To get started, you need to empty out your entire fridge.
Joyce said: “Remove everything from the shelves, drawers, and doors and organise them out onto a large space such as your counter.
“Sort through all items and throw away any which are expired and unwanted.
“Any foods which carry a foul odour and jars which have been sitting there for a prolonged time, such as jams and chocolate spread, should be disposed of.
“Bacteria can multiply at room temperature so put any perishable items into cool bags whilst you deep clean.”
Wash and rinse
All shelving, drawers and door racks can be washed in the sink with regular liquid and warm water.
Joyce explained: “With glass shelves, wait until they warm up to room temperature before washing them otherwise it can crack.
“Avoid using the dishwasher as some plastic can deform under a hot wash which can cause problems fitting them back into the fridge.
“Leave everything to air dry on the draining board and once dry, store away until you are ready to put them back. This will reduce the risk of bacteria being sent back inside the fridge.”
Use the right detergents for surfaces
Avoid using harsh detergent sprays inside your fridge as the strong odour can transfer directly onto your food.
Instead, Joyce recommends opting for a vinegar spray by mixing two parts water with one part white vinegar or make a paste mix of one part bicarbonate of soda and seven parts water to wipe down the interior.
The expert said: “Start your cleaning at the top to avoid anything dripping down on clean areas.
“Target the ledges, walls, and condensation trough before cleaning the base of the fridge. This is a breeding ground for crumbs and residue build-up.
“For any difficult stains, use a plastic scrubber and toothpaste as it contains a gentle abrasive.”
Dust the fridge condenser coils
To keep your appliance running efficiently, unplug and use your hoovers crevice attachment to gently dust the condenser coils.
Joyce said: “They will look like a metal grid and can be found running up the back of the appliance or on the bottom.
“Avoiding this can prevent your fridge from cooling properly and thick dust can reduce the efficiency by as much as 25 percent.
“Once dusted, use a separate brush to clear away any remaining dirt and dust from the coils.”
Disinfect the exterior
The exterior of your fridge is the most frequent touchpoint and can harbour a lot of bacteria, Joyce said.
She explained: “Dampen your cloth with mild soap and warm water and give special attention to the areas which attract a lot of fingerprints, such as the handles and ice dispensers.
“If your fridge is stainless steel, use professional stainless-steel cleaners and wipe in the direction of the grain and dry to prevent streaking.”
