Resident dies, firefighter missing at New York nursing home fire

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. – One resident died and one firefighter is missing as a massive fire tore through an assisted living home for adults in the village overnight.

The fire broke out shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults.

Officials said around 8:45 a.m. that one resident died after being taken to a hospital, and a Spring Valley firefighter was missing. 

The adult care facility offers assisted living, nursing home and continuing care for older adults.

There are about 133 residents of Evergreen, according to John Lyon, a spokesman for Rockland County Executive Ed Day.

Lyon said 23 of 26 Rockland County volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze, which was still burning as of 7:30 a.m. Fire departments from Bergen County also responded.

Clarkstown Councilman Frank Borelli thanked first responders in a Facebook post for their response Tuesday morning.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved in the horrific blaze that occurred at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults in Spring Valley,” Borelli said. “Thank you to the many heroes who tirelessly worked to tackle the blaze and help the residents.”
